Ready to make money blogging?
Whether you’re tinkering with the idea of blogging to make a little side cash, or you’re ready to quit that full-time job you hate, making money with a blog is an awesome option. And in my opinion, it’s pretty damn fun.
So, let’s begin by running through the basics, shall we?
START A BLOG
To make money blogging, you’ll first need to get yourself a blog. Pretty self-explanatory, but hey, ya never know.
If you’re in the dark on how to get your own blog set up, check out my simple instructions on how to start a blog for beginners.
This step-by-step guide will have your blog up and running in under 30 minutes.
And if you’re looking to monetize your blog, then you’ll reeeally want to check out my 11 favorite blogging tools that make my days SO much easier AND profitable.
CREATE KILLER POSTS
If you want people to read it, it’s got to be great.
And a great post is often one that solves a problem or answers a question.
Makes sense, right?
So, do a little detective work and find out how you can help your audience.
Find out what your readers need
Here’s how to get this done:
Head over to Facebook Groups
Listen in to what your fellow bloggers are frustrated with. Pay attention to the questions they are asking the group. These groups are gold mines for finding popular posts within your niche.
If you’re looking for a new Facebook group to join, I’d love to have you in mine or check out my list of awesome Facebook groups in my Blogger Resource Collection.
Take a peek at your competition
What are your fellow bloggers writing about? If it’s working for them, it can work for you too!
Get inspiration from other bloggers in your niche and expand on their ideas.
Check out Pinterest
Pinterest seems to have an answer for everything, right? Do a quick search in Pinterest to see what’s trending within your niche.
Below is an example of how to search Pinterest for ideas within the homeschool niche.
Simply type ‘homeschool’ in the search bar and Pinterest will list popular searches for homeschool (with the most popular listed from left to right).
Here you’ll see that many people are searching about homeschool curriculum and homeschool schedules.
You’ve instantly got two great post ideas to work into your content strategy.
For awesome tips on how to create a killer blog content strategy, I highly recommend reading through this article by Bill at Themeisle. Tons of good info here.
Make your posts shareable
Once you have these amazing blog posts created and published, be sure your readers can easily share them.
My favorite way to do this is by using a WordPress plugin called Social Warfare.
Social Warfare makes it easy to include social share buttons on your posts and/or pages for nearly any social media platform that you can think of. And you also get the option of customizing which images are shared on the individual platforms you use.
Pretty dang awesome.
START AN EMAIL LIST
I know, this sounds like it could be be a ton of work – especially if you don’t know where to begin.
In which case, I gotcha covered right here, girlfriend.
Starting a quality email list right from the get-go should be at the top of your list. If making money is in your blog plan, then there’s absolutely no point in putting it off.
Here are a couple tips to get ya started:
Get yourself an email provider
There are many email service providers to choose from. Find the one that best suits your needs. I started with Mail Chimp but ended up switching to ConvertKit so I could monetize my blog more efficiently and effectively.
It was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my blog so far.
Create an irresistible freebie to attract subscribers
A freebie is also known as an incentive or lead magnet. You need to entice your readers to subscribe to your email list. Essentially, offer them something of value for free, in return for their email address.
There’s a whole strategy behind this process. And to help a girl out, I’ve built a FREE course, The Irresistible Freebie, to get you started. Check it out and let me know if you have any questions!
With these two steps under your belt, you’re on your way to turning readers into subscribers, and subscribers into buyers.
SELECT YOUR STREAMS OF INCOME
Now, what does all this hard work get you? Well, if you play your cards right, it’ll make you money. And depending on the way you work it, you’ll simply make a bit of pocket change, or you’ll get to quit that nasty old 9-5 of yours.
So, let’s take a look at the different ways you can make money blogging.
One of the more popular ways to make money is through affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing essentially looks like this:
1. You partner with companies that sell products/services that you use and/or love.
2. You recommend these products/services to your readers, and include your special link (provided by the company) for readers to use at check out.
3. Once the purchase is made, you earn a commission.
Easy peasy, yeah? And if used strategically, it can be a great source of passive income for your blog.
You can promote your special affiliate links in all sorts of places.
Here are some of my faves:
Stick those links in your posts – especially your most popular posts, which you can identify by checking in with Google Analytics.
Google Analytics can seem scary at first. But don’t let that keep you away! You need to keep your eye on your analytics. Check out Sara’s awesome post at Business News Daily to break it down for you as a beginner.
Emails to subscribers
If you use a killer product or service that you know your tribe would love, mention it in your weekly emails. Make sure that these are genuine referrals and don’t come off as super ‘salesy’. That’ll only get you a bunch of unsubscribes.
Create eye-catching pins for Pinterest, craft catchy posts for your Facebook page and groups, and tweet about them across Twitter. I love this quick read by Chloe at Chloe Social for ways to get your links up on social media.
Affiliate marketing takes some good strategy. It’s usually not as simple as throwing a few links around here and there.
I’ve got a full post on affiliate marketing for beginner bloggers if you’re interested in making this a part of your monetization strategy.
Products + Services
Probably one of the biggest income streams for many bloggers, is selling stuff. There is something to sell within nearly every niche. And many bloggers are jumping on this money train.
A few of the more popular products and services sold through blogging include:
- Online courses/workshops
- Images or music for people to incorporate into their own content
- Apps, plugins, website themes
- Web Designing
Selling space on your website is one of the easier ways to make money blogging. Whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve got thousands of followers, placing ads on your site can be a great way to help bring home the bacon with your blog.
Many bloggers fall head-over-heels in love with direct ads.
Direct ads (sometimes known as sponsors) are often displayed as banner ads or display ads, which are provided directly to the blogger by the advertiser to be included somewhere on the blog.
Payment methods and pricing can vary greatly from blogger to blogger, depending on the amount of traffic the blog brings in. Pretty straight forward.
A bit different from direct ads, contextual ads are most often pay-per-click ads. This means the advertiser pays the blogger each time someone clicks on their ad.
Typically, this type of advertising should be relevant to the blog’s content. This helps to increase the chances of a reader actually clicking on the ads and then making a purchase.
One of the more popular contextual advertising programs is Google AdSense. If I were considering working ads into my blog, I’d get my feet wet with contextual ads.
This can seem a bit daunting at first. Making new buddies on the internet isn’t the easiest for some people.
But let me tell you, it’s totally necessary. And really, it’s not so bad.
In fact, it may just become one of the more enjoyable aspects of starting your own blog. Once you break the ice, networking within your niche can be an awesome component to your blogging strategy.
So, determine where your people hang out on social media. Does your niche prefer to mingle on Facebook and Pinterest? Or are they tweeting away on Twitter?
Find them. And reach out to them. Comment on their blogs, ask for their advice, or even offer up your advice. Building these relationships will prove vital to the success of your blog.
Once you’ve made a few blogging buddies, you can begin to leverage those relationships and work together on projects.
This is a great way to increase your traffic, and ultimately your income.
A few great ways to collab with fellow bloggers include:
Write a blog post for another blogger’s site. This is an awesome way to increase your exposure with a new audience.
Not sure how to get started?
Pop into your Facebook groups and look for threads about collaboration. You’ll often find other bloggers looking for someone to share guest posts with there.
You can also Google it. Simply type in ‘write for us + your niche’ and a bunch of results will come up for collab opportunities in your niche.
Join forces with another blogger in your niche to create an awesome webinar for your audiences.
Need help finding a team mate to work with?
Turn to your Facebook groups. You’ll find lots of new bloggers in these groups who are looking for ways to expand their audience too.
As you become familiar with other bloggers in these groups, you’ll get an idea of who their target audience is. If it’s similar to your own, ask them if they’re up to join you for a webinar.
Chances are, they’d love to!
Partner with other bloggers to promote your services and products to another audience.
This is a fun way to build relationships with your fellow bloggers and drum up business at the same time.
